Summary:
Administers, supervises and directs all activities involved in establishing a total therapeutic environment in a Phoenix House treatment facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
• Acts as Community Liaison for the Facility. Must meet on a periodic basis with community leaders, block associations and other organizations in the vicinity of the facility. Must be available to participate in other community activities as may be designated by executive staff.
• Responsible for the supervision of all facility staff; teaching and training of staff in the theoretical and clinical aspects of resident therapeutic community treatment, providing individualized training whenever necessary while observing staff performance in actual resident treatment situations. Meets with all staff on a weekly basis (inclusive of medical and food services personnel) to evaluate progress of residents, including mental and emotional growth or regression and attitude.
• Makes recommendations for promotions, demotions, changes in job assignments, facility transfers, expulsions, hospital (or other agency) referrals, movement of residents to the next level in rehabilitation process, and where applicable, stipend increases, day-out approval and social assignment recommendations.
• Responsible for screening and interviewing all new residents entering the facility, making appropriate notations on personal, social, legal and medical information, with immediate follow-up to central departments where indicated.
• Develops, plans and initiates methods of exposing residents to the re-education process designed to alter former lifestyles, attitudes, images and other negative behavioral patters. Supervises and participates in all necessary group encounters; plans and conducts resident marathons; conducts various celebrations, i.e., book sessions, seminars, morning meetings.
• Directly responsible for all residents assigned to ancillary departments as stipend workers. Maintains ongoing communication with supervisors and reviews all stipend evaluations prepared by ancillary staff.
• Maintains contact with all ancillary managers, gathering information to improve management of facility. Monitors facility budget, where applicable, and ensures that facility is in compliance with all program regulations.
• Responsible for all one-to-one resident counseling as an ongoing method of treatment. Provides subordinate staff with methods and plans for resident work assignments, recreation programs, vocational seminars, educational assistance and discussion workshops, as well as therapeutic treatment encounter sessions.
• Supervises and controls all movement of re-entry residents inclusive of privileges (days out, stipend amounts, social assignments); makes final decisions regarding re-entry residents` educational and vocational training; conducts weekly tutorial meetings with re-entry clients to discuss and evaluate needs and ambitions as well as problems, utilizing reality therapy as a means to directing individuals toward attainable goals.
• Responsible for the treatment and progress of all clients within the unit, clinically, vocationally and educationally. Responsible for residents` immediate personal, medical and monetary welfare. Must be available for hands-on work, when necessary.
• Plans, supervises and attends all official functions of the facility, including monthly open house, encounters, arts and crafts, and weekly group meetings where family, friends and other interested parties participate in sessions.
• Directly supervises Deputy Director and Administrative Staff. Supervises all correspondence, resident information reports, monthly and quarterly resident evaluations, legal reports to various officials and agencies, resident case summaries and any other reporting required by central ancillary departments.
• Attends meetings called by Vice President, Director of Adult Residential Services as well as periodic meetings called by the Senior vice President. Participates in discussions concerning the revision, improvement and expansion of existing programs and offers recommendations for future development of programs within facilities.
• Responsible for clinical coverage of the facility and must be available on a "on-call" basis for emergency situations, 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
Qualifications
• Business Degree or a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
• Ability to perform under clinical and administrative pressures. Total familiarity with the different departments within the facility structure and their function.
• Six months to one year on-the-job training under the supervision of a senior clinical staff member.
• In-depth knowledge of workings of a therapeutic community. Ability to successfully treat residents by application of various therapeutic techniques. Experience for a period of time sufficient to demonstrate clinical competence.
• Must be credentialed chemical dependency counselor. Must meet requirements for the completion of a security clearance.
